Celebrating One Year On My Journey To New Me!

Me At The Beginning of
My Journey To A New Me
I know that everyone has probably been holding their breath since yesterday in anticipation to my big weigh-in yesterday morning and the waiting is over.... Almost. It would not be nearly as much fun if I didn't let the anticipation build just a little bit, would it? It reminds me of the old movies where they were filmed in black and white and the music would change to something fast paced and you knew something was about to happen. So with a drum roll please I would like to announce my weigh-in at the completion of my one year mark on my journey to a new me............................ (that's my version of a drum roll)

As of yesterday I have successfully lost ....... 99 pounds in one year! I praise the Lord for helping me to have the strength, courage, and determination to accomplish so much in one year! I am now a believer first hand that with God all things are possible. God's word tells us
"but with God ALL things are possible. (Matthew 19:26). So if he said it, I believe it, and I trust that I can continue on my journey to a new me to lose that last little pound and begin my second phase to lose 50 pounds in my second year!

Well I can already hear some of you. "Well I guess she is disappointed that she did not hit her 100 pounds in one year goal.". And to anyone who thinks that I am discouraged, or down by not seeing that 100 pounds I have something to tell you. If someone was going to be a lawyer and they went to take the bar exam after all of their years of college, law school and hundreds of hours of study and they took that bar exam knowing that they had done their very best. They could not have studied one more minute, they couldn't have read any more law reviews, or crammed any more than they did. They walked into the room to take their bar exam and felt like they "Aced" it. ( that means made a perfect score). And when the results were in they had made one point lower than perfect. Would they be disappointed? Would they be considered a failure? I say NO! To me they would have something to be very proud about. There is no shame in coming in super close to your goal but not hitting it exactly. Why? Well for me I believe the Lord is still teaching me that it is by his grace that I have made it this far, and it is by his grace that I will accomplish all that I have set out to do.

I am not stopping now on my journey to a new me. With every passing day I am one step closer to my goal of 100 pounds. Mi love to look in my rearview mirror on my journey to see just how far that I have come! Here is a little look back over the past year on my journey to a new me.

Saying Good Bye To Nashville

Our fabulous three day wedding anniversary weekend in Nashville, TN is over today and we have to drive back home to Georgia.  I am a little sad to have to leave because it has been a much needed time to spend some quality time together.  We have been married for 28 years and just like anything else there are times when we just don't get to spend enough time on the things, or should I say people that are important to us.  My husband is very important to me.  He has no idea how much I depend on him and his encouragement.

When I began my journey to a new me I remember the first thing that he said to me when I left the doctor's office and told him what the doctor had said about me doing something about my obesity.  I told my husband that the doctor wanted me to only eat 1400 calories per day.  It seemed impossible to do even as I repeated those words to him, but his initial response was, "I think you can do it".  He had faith for both of us.  He is such a strong spiritual leader in our home too.  He stands on God's word and believes that we will succeed if we put the Lord first.  I have to admit that there are times that I believe but maybe not as quickly as he does.  He is a good example of a person who has the faith of the grain of mustard seed.  Notice I did not say he has the faith of a mustard seed but the "grain" of mustard seed.

When I was a little girl my grandmother who we called "Maw Maw" always wore a little gold pin on her dress or house-dress that said "Jesus Saves" and there was a very small seed encased in a little glass ball.  Every time that I would hear  a minister preach about faith and that the Bible teaches us to have the faith of a grain of mustard seed, I always thought about her special pin.  It was only after my grandmother passed away a few years ago that I found out what the scripture was actually referring to.

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.  Matthew 17:19-21 (in Context)
Matthew 17 (Whole Chapter)

Please notice, it does not say to have the faith of the mustard seed, it says that we are to have the faith of a grain mustard seed.  Did you know that if you had a mustard seed in the palm of your hand it would be a about the size of a sesame seed.  If you squeezed that mustard seed you would have 100's of little microscopic grains that would burst out of the seed.  Well that is what the Bible is referring to, the "grain" of the mustard seed.  (the little "grain" of the mustard seed) is all that is required.

I was thinking about this today as we prepared to go home and began getting our bags packed.  Tomorrow morning I will step on Mr. Scale for my one  year weigh in.  I believe with all of my heart that I have been on my program eating only 1400 calories per day this weekend and we have been very active.  I want more than anything for the scale to report that I have lost the 100 pounds and maybe a little extra!  Faith is a requirement that I have developed on my journey to a new me.  I believe that I got a full dose of it the day that I left my doctor's office on December 10, 2010 and I have been using it every step along my way.  You see without faith it is impossible to please God.

So I have shared with you about my faith and how it is helping me to stay motivated and encouraged on my journey. What about you?  What are you doing with your faith?  Is it in a little glass ball hanging from a small gold pin that says Jesus Saves or are you using it to help you on your journey to a new you?  I don't know about you but isn't it time we put a little pressure on that mustard seed and watched those little grains take root in our life?

Decisions, Decisions, And More Decisions!

We got up this morning to begin a new day and we had decisions, decisions and more decisions to make. We are staying near the Gaylord Opryland resort, but unfortunately not in it.   When I called they were booked solid for the entire month of December. So we have settled for a nice suite at the Best Western. Our first decision of the day was what to eat. The choices were unlimited. The hotel offers a free continental breakfast but this consisted of cereal, sweet rolls, muffins, biscuits and gravy and the make-yourself waffles. Yes you guessed it, all starch! On my journey to a new me I have learned a long time ago that starting your day with a "healthy breakfast" is one of the keys to unlock weight loss. The other choices were: the Cracker Barrel, Waffle House, and Bob Evans. We chose the later and put our name on the list for a 15 minute wait for a table. Unfortunately it turned into 35 minutes and my stomach was growling like crazy!

I had two scrambled eggs with one slice of cheese, one piece of wheat French toast with sugar free syrup and two slices of crispy bacon. We then had more decisions to make. Were to go and what to do before arriving at the Grand Ole Opry to see the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular Show. We drove around Nashville to see the city, and found Boswell Harley Dacidson where I tried on new leather jackets and showed my sweet husband a few things that I would like for Christmas. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed for the Rockettes.
I have seen many Broadway shows in New York City over the past ten years and I have been a regular patron of the Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA and I can honestly say that I do not believe that I have ever seen a better show! The poise and precision of their performance was extraordinary. I just kept wondering, "How Do They Do That?". Near the end of the show my husband leaned over and whispered to me, "Are you learning those moves?" And I replied, "Are you kidding? That is crazy!". We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and tonight we have our last event to attend, The Music City's Christmas Spectacular Lights Display.

This has been one of the most memorable wedding anniversaries that we have ever had and we have had a great time sharing and reconnecting. I learned at the beginning of my journey to a new me that I don't have to sacrifice a good time or a vacation. The same rules apply while I am traveling as I maintain in my every day life. It is called "Pay Attention". By this I mean, 1) Pay attention to what I am putting into my mouth. 2) Pay attention to the portion size. 3) Pay attention to how the food that I am ordering is prepared and finally 4) Pay attention to my stomach when it is telling me it is full or that I am not hungry!

If I do these four simple things I have no problems staying within my 1400 calories per day!
I don't know if you believe me, but on this trip we have been so active that I may just need a vacation from my vacation to get a little rest!

Celebrating 28 Wonderful Years Of Marriage

Today is the beginning of several special things for me.  Today my husband and I traveled to Music City USA (Nashville, TN) to spend a three day weekend celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary.  On December 10, 1983 I said "I Do" to my best friend in the world.  And I am happy to say that he is still my best friend in the whole wide world!  I was a very young girl of 19 years of age when I made those vows "To death do us part" and that marked the adventure of a lifetime for both of us.  Don't get me wrong, our marriage is not perfect because no marriage is perfect.  But I would not trade my marriage for anything in this world, but we are like every other couple out there.  We have our good times and our less than good times.  (That is the same as bad times, but sounds a little better worded this way. Don't you? )  I can honestly say that if I had to weigh the two,  the good times would far out weigh the less than good times.

On my journey to a new me I have often wondered why my husband has stood by me through the years of  "thick and thin" .  (And by looking at pictures of me from December 11, 2010 and earlier years, you would probably agree that there were more "thick" than "thin" years.)  So it is with a heart full of love that I get the opportunity to spend three uninterupted days with my husband and best friend.  We are
enjoying the "Sights and Sounds" of America's Country Music Capitol, Nashville, TN.

Tonight we enjoyed a country music filled evening at the Opry at the Ryman Auditorium.  We found ourselves serenaded by country music legends from old like, Jimmy Dickens, who has been performing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry since the 1940's, Jeannie Seely, Bill Anderson and  John Conlee and the final performance was by Darius Rucker who recreated his career by moving from pop music to country music and he brought the house down!

Another big event that will take place this weekend is my one year mark on my journey to a new me.
On December 11, 2010 I began my journey to a new me to lose 100 pounds in one year.  If you would have told me a year ago that in 12 short months that I could successfully lose 100 pounds, Without  Surgery!!!  I would have been very doubtful.  You see, I am the obese person who made every excuse under the sun to not do anything about my weight, except to add to it.  This morning when I visited Mr. Scale I stepped onto the scale in anticipation of what the digital numbers would declare.  It was not unlike the weigh-ins that I watch on The Biggest Loser.  The scale started displaying different numbers as it searched for what my actual weight was, and for one brief moment I saw the number that I have been working so hard to acheive, but before I could shout out loud with excitement the scale stopped just short of my goal.

As of this morning I am down 98.8 pounds.  So I am only 1.2 pounds away from that incredible goal of 100 pounds in one year! We will not be back in town for me to actually weigh in again on December 11th so I will step onto that scale again on Monday morning December 12th to see if I have met or surpassed my goal.  I am not worried one bit about the results, or about gaining a pound or two while on our weekend getaway.  Why?  Because I am well equipped with my cell phone app, myfitnesspal.com and I am staying at my 1400 calorie per day allowance.

Some may think that I have put too much emphasis on my journey to a new me.  That trying to lose
100 pounds in one year was unthinkable, but I know that this 100 pounds is only the beginning of what I need to lose.  My health and well-being has improved with every pound that I have lost.  In my last blog post I announed that I would like to lose 50 pounds next year.  You may ask, "Will you be at your goal weight once you acheive the 150 pounds?"  And to be quite honest, I don't know.  I probably won't know until I get there, but the not knowing will not stop me from working hard to hit that new goal.  Now that I have begun this journey I am not going to stop until I finally get there.  And wherever "there" is, it is certainly better than were I am today.

Three Pounds To Victory!

My husband and I at our huge family Christmas Party this past Sunday!

When I was a young girl we often had to find ways to "entertain" ourselves.  We did not have cable TV satellite, movies on demand, or the RedBox to go get a movie from.  Whether we were indoors or told to "Go outside and play", we had to create fun and exciting ways to "entertain" ourselves and one of those ways was to play games.

One of my favorite games was "Mother May I"?  To play this game you simply had to have two people but it was more fun with three or more.  One person would be the  "mother" and the others would stand about 100 feet away in a line and wait to be asked a question.  The question would be something like this:  The person who was the mother would tell the first person,  "Take two giant steps" and that  person would have to say "mother may I"? before taking the two giant steps.  If they just took two giant steps without asking permission  by saying "Mother may I"? they would have to go all the way back to the starting point.  The next person would then be asked a question like, "Take three baby steps".  If they replied "Mother may I"?  then the mother would reply "Yes you may" and they would then take those three baby steps and be that much closer to winning the game.   You see to win the game you have to successfully reach the person playing the role of mother before anyone else did.

So as I stepped on the scale today and saw that I was just three small pounds away from my Huge 100 pound goal on my journey to a new me I began to reflect about those three baby steps.  I know decades ago when I played that "Mother may I"? game we always wanted to hear the "mother" call out to us, "Take Three Giant Steps!" no one wanted to be asked to take baby steps.  The giant steps were so fun because that meant that you would get to her quicker, but what we did not realize was that in our excitement we would forget to say those magic words "Mother may I"? and we would be told to start all over again.

Well today I am happy to report that I will gladly accept my challenge of those three little pounds, or my three baby steps, and instead of saying "Mother may I"?  I will say instead "The good Lord willing, I will drop those last three pounds by my December 11, 2011 dead line.  That may seem like an impossible thing to accomplish in such a short amount of time but with my God I know that all things are possible.

So there is reason to rejoice on my journey to a new me and it is time to celebrate those last three baby steps because once I accomplish that I can begin my next phase on my journey to a new me and that is to lose 50 pounds in '2012!

Six Reasons You’ll Lose Weight This Holiday Season

Today I read a very good article on www.msn.com regarding weight loss during the holidays.  I know this sounds to good to be true, but there is a very good argument that it can be done.  Take a few minutes to read this blog post and see if you agree.  With my current weight loss of 95.6 pounds on my journey to a new me I am willing to give a few of these ideas a try.

Six  Reasons You’ll Lose Weight This Holiday Season

Best Way to Lose Weight This Winter, forget trying to fend off a little extra flab.
Take control and drop pounds with these simple strategies
By Greg Presto

The good news:   Most Americans don't gain the 5 to 10 pounds over the holidays you've heard about. The bad news:   What we do gain, we keep: According to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine back in 2000, most of us actually pack on just a pound or two…but we never take it off, gaining as much as 20 pounds over a decade.
That’s a convincing reason to keep your diet in check this holiday season, but don't just fend off excess chub—use certain seasonal factors to your advantage and shed weight by the end of December. Save your New Year's resolution for learning a new language or taking a longer vacation, because with these simple strategies, you've got seven  science-backed strategies that will help you lose weight during the festive finish to the year.

1.        Because You're Going to Eat Turkey

When the platter comes around, pile on the poultry: Filling a quarter to a third of your plate with turkey could be the difference in keeping weight off. Multiple studies have shown that when lean protein composes 25 to 30% of total calories, people gain less weight, and dieters lose more. In one study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants reported less hunger and greater satisfaction, and ate 441 fewer calories per day.

Light meat or dark meat? It doesn’t really matter: A 4-ounce serving of white has 153 calories, and the same serving of dark meat has 180—that 27-calorie difference equates to a quarter-mile of walking, or two fewer bites of mashed potatoes. The stuff to avoid is excess gravy and turkey skin: The added fat from these extras can shift the nutritional percentage of your plate, lowering the proportion of protein, and squelching the benefits.
Green beans, yams, cooked carrots—unlike most times of the year, Americans actually eat their vegetables during the holidays. When people eat foods that are less densely stuffed with calories—or foods you can eat a lot of for very few calories, such as vegetables and even turkey—they feel fuller on fewer calories. In one study, participants on a low energy-density diet felt full after eating half as many calories as their counterparts who were eating a high-density diet. The same study authors found that adding just 200 g of vegetables to a meal—2 cups of green beans, for instance—was enough to make people full faster.
The tricky part: Watch how the vegetables you eat are prepared. While steamed or boiled green beans are low in calorie density (just 11 calories per ounce), creamy preparations like casseroles are twice as dense (one recipe is 25 calories per ounce). Scoop smaller portions of veggies prepped with sugar (like candied yams), gobs of butter, or loaded with cream.

2.       Because You'll Warm Up with a Cup of Tea
Green tea should come with a cape: It can fend off more than 10 types of cancer, reduce risk of liver disease, help control blood sugar, lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, raise HDL (good) cholesterol, battle tooth decay, and may also boost metabolism and help burn fat. In one study, participants who drank 2 cups of green tea per day lost an average of 2.6 more pounds over 90 days than members of the control group who did not drink tea. They also lost 1.9 cm in waist circumference compared with those who didn’t drink tea. Researchers credit the catechins in green tea for this benefit.

Green tea isn’t the only brew with benefits. Sipping any type of tea before a big meal can help you avoid overindulging. In a 2008 study at Penn State University, subjects who had hot liquid before eating consumed 134 fewer calories at the meal—a number that took into account the calories from the liquid.

If you choose a festive peppermint blend, the scent could also help you eat less. A study at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia found that dieters who sniffed peppermint every 2 hours ate 1,800 fewer calories over a 5-day period than when they didn't smell the mint. For even more benefit (and flavor) sprinkle on some fat-torching cinnamon: In a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, cinnamon was shown to increase sugar metabolism by a factor of 20.

3.        Because You Can Only Attend So Many Holiday Parties
Keep your weight in check by having cheat days, not cheat months. Three (or even 6) days of overeating during the course of 6 holiday weeks won't result in weight gain, says Kara Mohr, PhD, co-owner of Mohr Results in Louisville, KY.
"We always say people would be much better off if they treated the holidays like days instead of a season," she says. One day of indulgence here and there—on the actual holidays, like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving, and New Year's Eve, and at a few key parties—will never wreck your diet or physique, she says.
The problem: "Once you start on that slippery slope it becomes easier to give up and think, I'll never get back on track now—so I'll just pick things up in January or after the holidays," Mohr says.
Instead of falling into that trap and gaining weight that could put you at a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even death, plan ahead: Pack your lunch, prepare weekly meals, and hit the grocery store for healthy foods on days that aren't part of the holiday-scheduled indulgence. You can even get a head start on your New Year's resolution: If you cut just 300 calories from your diet each day for 6 days a week over that 6-week period, you can lose as much as 3 pounds over the holiday season (though results can vary). Eating 300 fewer calories is as simple as dropping two full-calorie sodas, or leaving three bites of food on your plate at the end of every meal.

4.        Because You Can Get Great Deals on Yoga, Pilates, and the Gym

Many deal-a-day coupons for fitness classes and month-long memberships expire on December 31—and overzealous Americans who aren't going to use the ones they bought are trying to unload them. Sites like CoupRecoup.com and Lifesta.com allow you to buy these discounted classes at even deeper discounts from people desperate to salvage some of the scratch they already spent: You can tell the sellers of these coupons how much you'll pay them to take the expiring deal off their remorseful hands. So a five-class kickboxing pass in Washington, DC, that was already 75% off can be had for 90% off. A month of unlimited boot camp classes in Omaha worth $199 can be grabbed for just $25. And a month of yoga in Manhattan can be had for $35, reduced from $108.

5.        Because You Get to Sleep In

Research shows that the less sleep you get, the more likely you are to be overweight. In a Case Western Reserve University study of more than 68,000 middle-age women, those who slept for less than 5 hours each night were 32% more likely to gain 33 pounds or more over the course of the 16-year study, compared with those who got 7 to 8 hours of rest. When you don’t get enough sleep, your appetite hormones go haywire—the amount of hunger-prompting ghrelin in your body goes up, and your body’s level of satiety-signaling leptin goes down. When you’re sleep-deprived, you’re also more likely to crave sugar and other carbohydrates because of the quick boost of energy they provide. Getting extra shut-eye can help curb this effect, but be sure you don’t go back to your sleep-deprived ways on January 3. “It has to be consistent,” says Robert Reames, CPT, a spokesperson for Gold’s Gym International. Catching up on slumber during the weekend to compensate for 4 to 5 hours of shut-eye Monday through Friday isn’t effective for weight loss. “It helps, but you’re still sleep deprived 5 out of 7 days a week,” he says.
6.        Because You'll Consume More Fiber from Peas, Corn, and Sweet Potatoes

Fiber makes you full faster and keeps you feeling that way longer, so it's no wonder that if you eat more of it you're more likely to be trim. In a study conducted at Bastyr University in Seattle, researchers found that women who ate more than the daily average of fiber—14 g—tended not to be overweight, while those who ate less than 14 were more likely to carry extra pounds. Susan Roberts, PhD, a researcher and professor at Tufts University, Research from the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging has shown that people who ate 35 to 45 g of fiber each day were less hungry while dieting and lost more weight than dieters who consumed less fiber.
The good news: Getting 14 g of fiber is simple at the holiday table. A cup of sweet peas contains a whopping 16.3 g of the stuff. Sweet corn contains 4.2 g of fiber per cup. A medium sweet potato delivers 3.8 g, and a cup of broccoli packs in 5.1 g
